Stainless steel is a durable, tarnish-resistant metal. 304 Stainless steel is the most common grade of stainless steel and is comprised of iron, a minimum of 18% chromium and 8% nickel and a maximum of 0.08% carbon. 304 Stainless steel is safe to wear for most but even trace amounts of nickel can cause a reaction if you have a severe allergy or sensitivity. Stainless steel can get wet in the shower, ocean, pool, etc. Over time, sweat, grime and dust can dull the metal. To maintain shine, wash with mild soap and water, then dry with a soft microfiber cloth every few months. Avoid wearing during activities that could pull or snag the jewelry. Apply lotion, perfume and deodorant before putting your jewelry on. While not wearing, store in a soft cloth jewelry bag to avoid tangling and scratching the metal.
925 Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals(often copper). In rare cases, 925 sterling silver can cause a reaction for people with severe copper allergies. The small percentage of other metals causes the sterling silver to tarnish; this is normal and manageable. Moisture and humidity expedite the tarnishing process; remove jewelry before showering, washing dishes, swimming and exercising. Avoid wearing during activities that could pull or snag the jewelry. Apply lotion, perfume and deodorant before putting your jewelry on. To maintain shine and remove oxidation, clean with a soft cloth or silver polishing cloth. Store in an airtight container (Ziploc, Tupperware, etc.) while not wearing to limit exposure to moisture and humidity.
